Svalbard Summer Dream Photo Tours & Expeditions

Svalbard Summer Dream Photo Expeditions in July and August are prime months for wildlife photography, with the beautiful midnight sun and an overwhelming abundance of birds and mammals. With great opportunities to capture species like polar bears, walruses, bearded seals, ringed seals, and whales, this is truly a photographer's dream. The bird cliffs are crowded with life in summer, reaching their peak at the end of July when the chicks jump from the cliffs.

As temperatures rise, the sea ice has retreated from the archipelago by mid-July. However, the northern pack ice remains an important hunting ground for polar bears and a feeding area for ice-specialised birds and whales. In July and August, the pack ice is usually located at 81-82 degrees North, making it essential to have an ice-strengthened ship - like the MS Virgo - for safe navigation in these remote and icy waters.

For passionate wildlife photographers, our Svalbard Summer Dream expeditions offer great opportunities to capture the rich variety of birds and mammals in their natural Arctic environment.

Exploring the
Pack Ice
Above 81° North

  • Photographing high Arctic wildlife in the pack ice
  • Be one of the northernmost humans
From mid-July, the drifting sea ice retreats northward, providing a challenging and fragile environment for polar bears, seals, whales, and birds in the pack ice.

Photographing
Polar Bears
on Sea Ice

  • Wildlife in the pack ice north of Svalbard
  • Polar bears on drifting sea ice
Polar bears on land are entering "deep sleep" mode as the sea ice diminishes, while polar bears further north in the pack ice remain active hunting seals.

Itinerary Svalbard Summer Dream

Svalbard is located at about 80 degrees North, so we schedule our Svalbard Summer expeditions in accordance with prevailing weather and ice conditions. Based on previous photo expeditions in July and August, we plan to use the travel route as illustrated on the map, but this may change due to ice, weather, and other conditions.

Day 1 - Departure from Longyearbyen through Isfjorden.

Day 2-4 - Heading toward the pack ice, searching for polar bears and other animals. Depending on the ice conditions, this will probably be north of Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet.

Day 5 - East toward Storøya, searching for polar bears and walruses.

Day 6 - Sailing south toward BrÃ¥svellbreen and into Hinlopen with walrus and bird cliffs.

Day 7-9 - Liefdefjorden with the Monaco glacier, northwestern corner of Spitsbergen with walrus, seals, and great landscapes. South to Kongsfjorden, with glaciers, birds, and marine mammals. Return to Longyearbyen late in the evening.

Day 10 - Disembarking the ship after breakfast and preparing for your journey home.

NOTE - One more day in northern/eastern parts of Svalbard is added to the itinerary for 11-day (10 nights) trips (14.07-24.07 & 24.07-03.08).

Arctic Birds
in Summer

  • Photographing Arctic birds at sea or on land
  • 24-hour photography in the midnight sun
  • High numbers of birds, especially some seabird species
In July, bird chicks are frequently fed by their tireless parents. By August, they begin tuning their flight skills, learning feeding strategies, and avoiding predators.
