Where to Photograph Polar Bears
WildPhoto mainly offers polar bear photography tours in Svalbard, where we have the widest range of pack ice, fjord ice and winter wildlife experiences. We have also organised selected polar bear photography trips to Kaktovik in Alaska and the east coast of Greenland, offering photographers access to very different Arctic landscapes and styles of polar bear photography.
Kaktovik in Alaska offers a very different kind of polar bear photography, especially in autumn when bears gather along the Arctic coast. It is best suited to photographers interested in behaviour, shoreline encounters and a distinctly Alaskan experience.
The east coast of Greenland offers a more remote setting, combining dramatic iceberg-filled landscapes with expedition-style travel. The landscape is often the main focus during a Greenland expedition, but if a polar bear appears, the photographic opportunities can be extraordinary. For photographers looking beyond Svalbard, Greenland adds another dimension to polar bear photography in the High Arctic.
Main Polar Bear Photography Opportunities

The primary opportunities for photographing polar bears are in the pack ice, across the winter landscape, and on the fjord ice. Below, you can explore what to expect when photographing bears in each of these settings.

in the Pack Ice
• Polar bears and other wildlife in the pack ice
• Explore the drifting sea ice above 80° North
Photograph polar bears in the far north, where they roam the endless sea ice in search of seals. Be one of the northernmost photographers in the world.

Svalbard is one of the best places in the world for polar bear photography expeditions in the pack ice. The archipelago offers relatively easy access to the sea ice, and in normal conditions it can often be reached within 24 hours. Polar bears in Svalbard are also protected and not hunted. Aboard an ice-class expedition ship, you begin in Longyearbyen at 78° North and head north and north-east, where the pack ice is typically found from around 80° North in winter and spring, and up to 83° North in summer and autumn.
The best time for polar bear photography tours in the pack ice is usually May, June, July and August. In some years with less sea ice, winter trips in March and April may also reach the pack ice. However, in years with heavier ice conditions, expeditions to the pack ice in May and even June can be more challenging. Booking a Svalbard Spring Awakening, Svalbard Summer Dream or Svalbard Autumn Magic trip will usually give you the best opportunities for photographing polar bears in the pack ice. Keep in mind that in autumn it may take time to travel all the way north to 83°N to find the edge of the pack ice.
Note: If you are a keen photographer, your chances of success in the pack ice are even better aboard a small 12-passenger ship such as MS Virgo, where a flexible itinerary and fewer guests mean less competition for the best photographic positions.

PhotographingPolar Bears in Winter Landscape
• Rare opportunity to photograph polar bears in winter
• Background with stunning winter landscape
• Polar bears on winter sea ice
Polar bears can be found on drifting sea ice, fjord ice, or along the shoreline, with the majestic winter landscape providing a stunning backdrop for photography.

Photographing polar bears and other wildlife in the High Arctic during the winter months often requires travel by snowmobile. The main challenge with snowmobile-based polar bear photography trips is the combination of long distances and demanding logistics. For most people, this means many hours of travel, complex arrangements and, potentially, few worthwhile photographic opportunities with polar bears. Government regulations and access restrictions also limit how useful snowmobiles can be for polar bear photography.
WildPhoto Travel pioneered winter ship-based expeditions to Svalbard, starting in March 2016. These photo expeditions – Svalbard Winter Extreme and Svalbard Winter Glow – opened up entirely new opportunities for photographers, allowing access to areas beyond the reach of snowmobiles and, in some conditions, even the pack ice in winter. The comfort and logistics of travelling aboard a small expedition ship also make life much easier for photographers, removing the need to spend hours each day riding a snowmobile.
Even from an expedition ship, photographing polar bears in winter is not easy. However, when the bears do appear, the photographic rewards can be extraordinary. The Arctic landscape in March and April is stunning, and a polar bear moving through this winter scenery can result in truly unique images.

Photographing Polar Bears on Fjord Ice

Fjord ice is an important polar bear habitat. Sea ice in fjord systems normally begins to form in late autumn, when temperatures fall below zero and connect the land to the pack ice and drifting sea ice. Throughout winter and spring, seals maintain several breathing holes in the fjord ice, creating an important hunting ground for polar bears.
In late March and early April, female polar bears with young cubs leave their dens. This is a critical time for the survival of both mother and cubs, and they are in urgent need of food. These mothers often favour fjord ice, especially in areas near glacier fronts where ringed and bearded seals give birth to their pups. These seal pups are relatively easy prey for polar bears, particularly for mothers that may have fasted for four to five months before giving birth and then nursing two or three cubs for around three months.
In May and June, seals still use the fjord ice for resting, and in some fjords there may be more than a hundred seals lying on the sea ice. This creates valuable hunting opportunities for polar bears, as the growing seal pups provide more energy for the bears. Throughout June, with the Midnight Sun shining 24 hours a day, the fjord ice gradually melts, and by the first week of July it has usually disappeared from most areas of Svalbard.
Photographing polar bears on sea ice often provides opportunities for images that show the bears within their wider environment, usually from some distance. From a small expedition ship, it may be possible to use an ice anchor at the outer edge of the fjord ice without breaking the sea ice. In some situations, polar bears may choose to approach the ship, creating excellent photographic opportunities. However, in places such as Svalbard there are strict rules governing a minimum distance of 500 metres before 1 July. Even so, photographing polar bears on fjord ice from a small expedition ship is generally much safer and more comfortable than from a snowmobile.
