Antarctica

We invite you to join us on a 14 days (13 nights) photo expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula in November 2017. WildPhoto Travel will be chartering the entire ship, M/S Polar Pioneer, for two photographers only expeditions early in the season. There will be a maximum of 54 guests, together with 3-4 WildPhoto guides. Get ready for an exciting photo expedition to Antarctica. NB: The first expedition date 01.11-14.11 2017 is a cooperation between WildPhoto and Joshua Holko photography (as in South Georgia 2015).

The main focus on this expedition will be penguins, seabirds, seals, landscape and ice. This expedition is early in the season so we expect nice icebergs and winter landscape. Very few photographers have visited Antarctica in early November, and we believe this will give you great photo opportunities. Antarctica is one of the hotspots for photographing penguins, seals in great landscape. We will be landing early in the morning to get the best light conditions, which you will miss on ordinary tourist trips.

We will schedule longer stops than usual when going ashore in order to provide participants with enough time to get excellent pictures. We use 5 zodiac boats to get ashore or when searching for the wildlife at sea.

With 9-10 full days near the Antarctic Peninsula, this expedition is for nature photographers who want more quality time with the antarctic wildlife and landscape.

WildPhoto Travel is a proud partner of the Penguin World project, and both expedition dates will have lectures about marine conservation and penguins (together with photography). We recommend everyone to read more information about this project and get involved.

Itinerary

Based on previous photo expeditions to Antarctica in November we plan to use the travel route as illustrated on the map, but this may change due to ice, weather and other conditions.

Day 0 We recommend everyone to have at last one night in Punta Arenas before the chartered flight to Puerto Williams.

Day 1  Departure from Puerto Williams, sailing out the Beagle channel.

Day 2  At sea, heading toward Antarctica.

Day 3  First landing at the South Shetland islands.

Day 4-12  We are visiting some of the best areas for wildlife and landscape photography, such as Antarctic Sound, Deception Island, Astrolab and south toward Lemaire channel. At this time of the year we expect areas like the Weddel sea, Lemaire Channel, Neko etc to be closed with ice, but there will be other areas for us to explore and photograph.

Day 13 At sea heading toward South America, Chile.

Day 14  Return back to Puerto Williams. Transfer to the airport.

Map Antarctica

Maps of our planned itinerary, but this is very dependent on weather and ice conditions. Green spots on the map are most likely free of ice, orange spots has an approx. 50% chance of free of ice and red spots are most likely not possible to visit during our early trips to Antarctica. Our final schedule of the expedition will be in accordance with prevailing weather and ice conditions. Click on the map for a larger version.
