Alaska

Welcome to the wilderness of Alaska. In the hart of costal Katmai we are organizing a very special photo expedition photographing the Grizzly bears when they are feeding on salmons. In September there are thousands of salmons in the shallow river, with a lot of water splashing, and the bears are relaxed and easy to photograph. There are no hunting in the area, so these bears don’t look at you as an enemy.

We are cooperating with a very experienced bear guide and small air planes will fly in the group and our photo gear. A wilderness tented camp close to the river will be our “hotel” for the period we are staying with the bears. See some of the opportunities from this area in the Nikon D5 Inspired video, filmed in September 2015.

We will only be 7 clients and 2 guides on this expedition to give each photographer the best photo opportunities. There are no lodges in the area, so this will be a pure wilderness experience, and some background in outdoor camping is recommended.

Official Nikon video from the Nikon D5 beta test by WildPhoto founder and guide Ole J Liodden in the “Grizzly River”. Our camp will be at the same spot, and we will visit the same areas of the river as in this video.

Itinerary

The itinerary for this expedition is weather dependent, but our plan is:

  • Day 1 Recommended flight to Kodiak, Alaska in the morning and transfer to the hotel. We meet in the evening for a welcome dinner and get ready for the expedtion start next day.

  • Day 2 Transfer to the small air plane harbour and prepare our flight out to Katmai. If weather is good we fly out as soon as possible. Flight time is approx. 1,5 hour. At arrival (only for the first group) the guides will prepare the camp and you can get organized. After some food we will head out to the river (500 meter walk from the camp) and start photographing the Grizzly bears.

Itinerary

The itinerary for this expedition is weather dependent, but our plan is:

  • Day 3-8 Enjoying the wilderness experience and photographing the fishing Grizzly bears.

  • Day 9 Prepare our flight back to Kodiak, which is weather dependent. Overnight at hotel in Kodiak.

  • Day 10 After breakfast transfer to Kodiak airport and prepare our flight back to Anchorage. We recommend 1-2 days extra in Anchorage before your international flight home, in case we are delayed back from the “Grizzly River”.

OUR CAMP

Our camp is located approx. 500 meter from the river and 20 meters away from the beach where the air planes are landing (on the water). There will be 2 spacious tents (4 persons) as Twin tents for two persons each, and 3 tents (3 persons) offered as single tents. These Hilleberg tents are high quality expedition tents and designed for rough weather and heavy rain which might occur in costal Alaska in autumn. We also have a large Food tent where the whole group can be seated and also a small WC tent with a toilet plastic bag – bucket system. We have electrical bear fencing around the sleeping area and the food area to protect against curious Grizzly bears. This is truly a wilderness camp, and expect bears to be around the camp daily. There are also wolves in the area which we can hear in the evening, but they are very shy and difficult to spot.

The guides will be in charge of protection agaist curiouse bears out in the field or in the camp. We do not use guns for protection, but flare and pepper spray. It’s not on every trip we need to use any of these deterrents. Talking to the bears is usually enough to make everything safe. We have never experienced any attacks or injuries from the bears, but it’s very important that all people respect the distances and rules that the guides need to enforce to keep both the photographers and bears relaxed and safe.
